What Great Influencer’s Read

I frequently have the opportunity to be in the offices of great leaders that lead churches and businesses.  Most recently, I was in the private study where Dr. Tim Elmore spends his time writing.

As I sat there, I scanned his bookshelves and a thought hit me. All great influencers that I know or have met, have something in common as it relates to what they read….

They spend a lot of their time reading biographies and books on history.

I am now spending my time asking them why.  Another blog post to come with what they say.

My Library Building Tool

The picture above is a screenshot from my computer.  The program is called Delicious Library.  I use it to log in all my books in my library (still working on getting all my books logged in).

For leaders who read, this will be a tool that will save you time and bring organization to your world.

I know many of you have a lot of books in your home or office (maybe even in your car).

Do you know what books you have?  What if you loan a book to someone?  Do you remember who borrowed what book and when?

Worry no more.  This easy-to-use software takes care of everything.  If you are looking for an affordable tool ($39.95) that will do more than you can imagine for your books, music, and many other products, look no more.

You can pick this product up in your local Apple store, on Amazon, or on the site of Delicious Library.

Enjoy.

Survey Results: Books Young Leaders Should Read

Daniel Decker and I collaborated on a non-scientific poll via social media.

We asked one question:

“What are the TOP 5 books ever young influencer/leader should read?”

The raw data reveals nearly 1,000 book recommendations submitted by over 200 people.  The results of this survey slanted more from the perspective of those involved with some aspect of ministry.

It is worthwhile to note that the Bible was the #1 suggested resource.  We take that as a given since it is THE foundation for which any true leadership emerges.

You can download the final survey results HERE.

For a tease, here are the seven books leading the list:

Good to Great by Jim Collins

The Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell

Tribes by Seth Godin

Linchpin by Seth Godin

Feel free to share your thoughts on the survey results.

Selecting What To Read

I once would read anything and everything.  However, time is limited and I want to build out certain areas of my life.  I have resigned myself to select magazines and books using an easy strategy (that works for me).

I frequently purchase books. I also subscribe to several magazines.  Plus, I receive books from people and from publishers.  So, I have a system of how to handle them all.

I handle books and magazines by doing one of the following:

  • Reading cover to cover
  • Skimming
  • Giving away

I normally read from one of these categories:

  • Biographies
  • Leadership
  • Spiritual disciplines
  • Gen Y
  • Human behavior

*Sometimes I will simply read an executive summary to determine if I want to read the entire book.
