What Adoption & Jake Are Teaching Me-Part 4

Lesson 4: Permanence

When I walk away from Jake to clean-up, to go the the bathroom, or do anything he gets upset.

Sometimes I want to say, “Jake, I am right here.”  (Now that I think about it, I often do.)

He follows me.  Everywhere.

He clings to me.  Constantly.

He wants to know where I am and what I am doing.  The best way for him to accomplish that goal is to stick right there with me.

He simply needs to know I am permanent in his life.  I want him to know that his daddy is here.  Here to stay.  Here no matter what.

I am here.

I started to think about my journey with God.  Guess what?  I want to know He is here.  Here to stay.  Here no matter what.

May I follow God.  Everywhere.

May I cling to God.  Constantly.

God is here.

(Feel free to catch up on our adoption journey.)

They Have A Story

(This post stems from a conversation with my friend and colleague, Jason Jeong.)

In 2009, the stat surfaced that 143,000,000 orphans existed in our world.

At first, I was appalled.  I was moved.  After awhile, I became numb.  Why?  That number is so overwhelming and incomprehensible.  I don’t know what to do.  Oh, where to begin?

Think with me:

  • Our national debt is over $12 trillion
  • The 2010 national budget is over $3 trillion
  • A human lives an average of 39 million minutes
  • There have been about 46 million abortions since 1973
  • Research says a baby is born every 3 seconds

I cannot even begin to understand what the above numbers mean.  Numbers like these often desensitize us from reality.  If our minds and hearts cannot get around a number, we typically remain disengaged and uncommitted.

Enough.

Attach yourself to this…

Every orphan has a name

Every orphan has a face

Every orphan has a story

I am committed to humanizing the orphan.  They are not just a large number that seems impossible to understand.

I want you to read the name

I want you to see the face

I want you to hear the story

Get it?  Got it?  Good!  The movement begins.  Join the tribe.

Stop the orphan epidemic!

What Adoption & Jake Are Teaching Me-Part 3

patience

Lesson 3: Patience

Let me be up front with you…I am not the most patient person in the world.

I like it NOW.  Maybe that is why God sees fit to develop this part of my life.

There are moments when I feel like (temporarily) giving up because it is hard.

There are moments when I try so hard to fix everything.

There are moments when his crying and screaming makes me run to the kitchen cabinet for headache pills.

There are moments when I question what is going on.

There are moments when I try to navigate how to better adjust.

There are moments when I love exactly where I am.

There are moments when I wonder when it will get really good.

There are moments when I get more quickly irritated with my wife and daughter.

There are moments when God must wonder when I will rest in His workings.

The way God works is a mystery but always beneficial. I genuinely believe this.

Persevering.  Waiting.  Committing.  Trusting.  Hoping.  Celebrating.

Steven Curtis Chapman’s newest album, Beauty Will Rise, has been encouraging.

I am learning that God is so much better than I used to believe. I am genuinely thankful…when it is good and when it is not so good.

I have learned from past experience that it is inside the waiting that God powerfully.  However, it is often not until after the difficulty that we actually see how God worked powerfully.

Pregnancy Counseling Tips for Pastors

4522619145

As pastors, we are often confronted with conversations that we are not prepared to adequately address.

I believe one of those conversations is how to counsel someone with an unplanned pregnancy.

Here’s help.  Bethany Christian Services stepped up to the plate with these easy to use tips:

  • Empathy – let them know that you hurt with them because you know this is a very difficult situation.
  • Support – You will go with them to talk with a pregnancy counselor, family members, or others.
  • Values – They should do whatever provides the best life for their child.
  • Options – Share with that they do have life-giving options.
  • Refer – Call Bethany Christian Services office or your local pregnancy resource center while they are in the room with you.

God trusts us to give others hope!  After all, he gave us hope and does so everyday.
