Pain touches everyone. Life tends to bombard us with difficult and uncomfortable situations that often leave us lurching through physical and mental pain. We can all point to recent situations that continue to fester as well as the scars from past pains. For some, pain becomes a motivator but for many, pain paralyzes us in fear and doubt and loneliness.

For me, pain has come from a myriad of places. I remember not getting a position at a church that I thought was best for me. I remember leaving a church because a man who attended the church decided he needed to run things, and it quickly became an unhealthy mess. I remember serving under a pastor who struggled to lead anyone. I remember leaving a job too early simply because I was unhappy. I remember struggling through a strained friendship.

These situations hurt me—some deeply—and left me lonely and disappointed. I wanted to quit. I wanted to run away. I’m sure you can tell a story or two, stories that would trump anything I’ve experienced.

Two years ago Craig Groeschel taught me that a leader’s constant companion is pain. If this is true, then how can we manage our relationship with pain? It seems that everyone on the planet is always trying to work through some kind of hurt or disappointment. It’s hard to just let go of those feelings. They often get the best of us and surface at the most inopportune times for us.

For me, I visited a counselor (several times). He helped me channel my feelings and provided some timely direction. I would like to say that this fixed it all. But it prompted me to head in another direction; the blame direction. I was often quick to react to my wife and kids during these periods of time. I would find someone to blame instead of being honest and dealing with my pain. I did not always handle pain very well.

After many years, I learned a life-changing truth: pain could be a defining moment, accelerating toward the plan that God wanted me to accomplish. I began to understand that pain was a catalyst, not a hindrance; an opportunity for growth, not an excuse for poor behavior.

But who signs up for pain? Not many people. And even if they do, we might categorize them as crazy. Crazy, however, is not so bad.

It’s not that we sign up for pain, it’s that we seek for the deeper lesson. We don’t allow pain to paint our lifestyle—one marked by bitterness and reactionary practices that end up marring our ministries and vocations. Pain, you see, has a purpose. Sometimes it protects us or breaks us, directs us or re-directs us, stops us or causes us to move quickly. So, if this is true, how can we use pain for good?

I have a few helpful hints that I’ve learned while dealing with my own pain. They are short and sweet, but they’ve helped me time and again. Here they are:

Listen carefully

Is the pain you are working through right now healthy pain? If so, what is it that can be learned? Is there a nugget of truth inside your storm of confusion that can be used to help you? The voice of pain can help us learn or unlearn life lessons that prove valuable in the long run.

Suck it up

Do not be afraid to hurt. Do not shy away from decisions that may lead you to pain. Give yourself permission to take some risks. Craig Groeschel also told me, “Often the difference between where we are and where God wants us to be is the pain we are unwilling to endure.” We must be willing to increase our pain threshold or else we, as leaders, will limit our influence.

Talk it out

Don’t become a hermit. Too often we retreat to the inside, hiding our pain from those who can help us the best. Find a friend or a counselor. Do not walk life’s journey by yourself. I know some people that feel that if they say they need help it is declaring weakness. If so, what is wrong with being weak? Remember, God is strongest when we are weakest (see 2 Corinthians 12:9).

Give it away

What you hold on to is what you believe you can control. What you release is what you believe you need help with. I love the hope in 1 Peter 5:7, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” (ESV)

Move forward

Do not allow pain to restrain you. There is so much in front of you that beckons your attention, your skills, and your time. Today could be the day that you accelerate toward the person and life God has just for you.

So, if pain is indeed a constant companion, why not make friends with him? A.W. Tozer said, “It is doubtful that God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.”

I have found that pain lays us bare—wide open before others. If we allow it, pain can accelerate influence, not from an ambitious standpoint but from the standpoint of service. Leading is serving; it is the embodiment of ministry. We serve first; influence is what follows. So pain can influence someone toward intimacy with God or reconciliation with a spouse or peace between rivals. Pain is the broad embrace of a God who can turn any situation for His glory.

At the end of the day, the development in my life and the influence from my life depend on pain. Remember, a defining moment could be as close as the next painful experience.

Have you ever wondered how to please God? This question can seem overwhelming to answer. Where do you even begin? What if you found out that it was easier to do than you first thought?

In John 17, we find Jesus praying and in verse 4 He says to His Father, “I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” If we took a deeper look at this verse, we will find nuggets that can help us to know how to please God.

When Jesus prayed, “I brought you glory,” the original language reveals through two pronouns that point to the fact that the work of Christ was nothing other than to glorify the Father. What does that mean?

To glorify someone or something means to honor them by making known their greatness. Jesus, through His life, honored God by making known His greatness. We see this demonstrated in His miracles, in His distribution of forgiveness, in His provision to people, in His humility to surrender His life on a cross, and in His powerful resurrection.

Did you know that God expected Jesus to accomplish the task for which He was sent to do? The words in this verse prove this to be the case. In other words, God believed in why Jesus was on earth and He fully trusted that the work He had entrusted to His Son would be accomplished.

How specifically did Jesus please God? John 17:4 answers this question: “…by completing the work you gave me to do.” The word completing implies a task that was completed to its fullest extent. Perhaps we could say that it reached maturity. The work started small and grew until it reached its desired heighth. Jesus finished His assigned task. Of course this prayer took place before the cross. However, this expression looks to the cross, thus including it in what He was to accomplish.

How can we please God? Honor Him by making His greatness known through our everyday lives. This can be done through our thinking, decision-making, speech, actions, extending love and forgiveness, and our responses to people. In so doing, we will accomplish the task that He believes that we can do. Our task will start small but will grow over time into maturity if we stick with it. May we not get lost in the pursuit of our fame, but become consumed with a holy discontent to believe that the only thing that matters is to listen to God and do what He says. If we can do this, God will be pleased.

We are overscheduled people. We often need help in organizing what is important. Remember what John Ortberg said, “To change, you have to want it.”

Here are two helpful resources to help us get what we want:

YouVersion – this is a free Bible tool for our phones that will help us to more frequently engage with God as we discover the relevance the Bible has for our lives. There are over fifty reading plans and can easily be synced with any mobile device. We will also find a community of people to interact with who are on life’s journey.

Monvee – this is an online tool that can help us to identify important factors unique to our spiritual lives, craft a growth plan based on who we are and what’s in the way, and then put our plan into action through a fully customizable dashboard.

William Tyndale said, ”There is no work better than to please God; to pour water, to wash dishes, to be a cobbler, or an apostle, all are one; to wash dishes and to preach are all one, as touching the deed, to please God.”

I was recently interviewed by a doctoral student about how to effectively build rapport while preaching to an unacquainted group of teenagers. I had to rank the answers in order of importance and explain each one. After the interview, I thought the responses might be helpful to share. I would love to hear your responses as well.

Here are the three ways that have helped me to build rapport not only with teenagers, but with all ages.

1. Understand the audience – know who they are
2. Be with the audience – avoid elevating yourself as a superior
3. Listen to the audience – be sensitive to their body language and facial expressions

What would you add to the list?

I have a two-year-old son, Jake. As you can imagine, he often becomes victim to bumps, cuts, and bruises. Literally, every time he falls down he walks over to me, points to what hurts and says, “Hurt. Kiss. Please.” I gladly lean over and kiss his boo-boo. He says, “Thank you, Daddy.” He then runs off. Jake may still hurt but some how I have lessened his pain. He feels comfort from his father.

Jake asks me to kiss his boo-boos because:

He knows that I care

He and his pain want attention

He knows relief will come if he makes his pain known

Some of you reading this post are hurting right now. You desperately need the kiss of a father. For you, perhaps the word “father” stirs up unpleasant memories. For others of you, there are memories of your father that you will forever cherish.

God, who the Bible calls a caring Father, deeply empathizes with your hurt. Would you let Him “kiss” your hurt? Your pain may not immediately go away, but somehow you will feel an indescribable comfort.

Why should you ask him to “kiss” your hurt?

He cares

He will give you and your pain attention

He will provide you relief if you make your pain known

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:7

You can be a teacher. Everybody can be a teacher. We can all teach someone somewhere about something.

You might be a mom, dad, business owner, pastor, or a teacher. Position does not dictate whether or not we teach.

For a number of years, I have had the opportunity to serve in a teaching role tinboth church and business environments. I appreciate both worlds and find them both necessary. Recently, I was reading a book that helps educators to create significant learning experiences.

Among others, he posed these two questions to educators:

In your deepest, fondest dreams, what kind of impact would you most like to have on your students? What is the distinctive educational impact you would like for your teaching and your courses to have on your students?

Selected responses:

develop a deep curiosity

apply and use what they learn in real-life situations

engage in lifelong learning

continue to grow as critical thinkers

mentor others

see the need for change and be a change agent

be creative problem solvers

develop key skills in life, such as communication skills

see the importance of community building, both at work and in their personal lives

You can be a teacher. Everybody can be a teacher. We can all teach someone somewhere about something.

If we were asked the following question how would we answer:

In your deepest, fondest dreams, what kind of impact would you most like to have on those that you teach? What is the distinctive impact you would like for your teaching to have on those that you teach?

May we not waste our teaching moments.

There are so many definitions of success. Phrases often associated with success include: climbing the ladder, closing a sale, record numbers at a worship experience, quality of material possessions, number of speaking engagements booked, and money made.

I was reading this morning about David’s success in 1 Samuel 18:5:

…David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him…

Then I read in verse 12:

Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him…

Why was David so successful?

I then read a little further in and landed on verse 14:

David had success in all his undertakings, for the LORD was with him.

Hmm.

Here is a popular phrase, “The devil made me do it.” Have you ever heard someone say it? Have you ever said it? I know I have thought it in my mind before.

We have given the devil way too much credit and space in our lives. For so long we have played the smaller dog role and let him assume the big dog role. Enough of that.

What if assumed the big dog role and dwarfed him? After all, because of Jesus the power inside of us is stronger than the pressures around us.

I think I have an idea of how to do it. The insight came from an unlikely source: The 2009 National Intelligence Strategy of the United States of America. Yes, you read that correctly. I spent some time reading the 24-page document this week. Interesting and insightful…believe it or not.

What can we learn and apply on how to strategically turn the tables on Satan?

create unity of effort – work together under the same direction

ensure accountability – make sure commitments get carried out

tailor support – use numerous solutions to win

foster agility – move quickly to ensure a win

deepen relationships – do deep life together

foster mission management – identify go-to people that are best in specific areas

Have you ever asked yourself, “What could I possibly do that is worthwhile?” You are not alone. I have asked myself that question more than once. Let me introduce you to seven people who were ALL influenced by another person.

It all started with a guy from Boston.

His name…

EDWARD KIMBALL led a small group at his church when he met a challenging teenager. That seventeen-year-old young man was poorly educated and prone to outbursts of anger and profanity.

His name…

DWIGHT L. MOODY. He became the “greatest” evangelist of the nineteenth century. In 1879, he was instrumental in the life change experienced by a young man.

His name…

F.B. MEYER. He became a minister. He mentored a young man.

His name…

J.W. CHAPMAN. He became a pastor and evangelist. He also started an outreach to professional baseball players. There he influenced a young man.

His name…

BILLY SUNDAY. He became one of the greatest evangelists in the first two decades of the twentieth century. He influenced a young man who eventually came back to work with him.

His name…

MORDECAI HAM. He became a preacher. He was preaching when a teenager responded to the invitation “to give your life to Jesus Christ.”

His name…

BILLY GRAHAM. He has influenced more people than any other preacher in history. He remains a trusted confidant to presidents and other key influencers.

Do the best you can where you are, with what you have, for a purpose that is greater than yourself. You can be someone worthwhile. You can do something worthwhile. Somebody needs YOU! Be a domino.

I recently traveled to Haiti with Soles4Souls. Incredible experience.

The last day we were there included spending time with babies and children in the orphanage, Maison Des Enfants De Dieu.

On the flight home, I was looking through the pictures of the children in the orphanage, and I cried. I asked, “What could I do for them?” So, I asked the director of the orphanage.

Formula for infants. They are currently running out.

Meet my little buddy, Stanley (right). He is one of over 70 children in the orphanage. Stanley and I had the best time playing with Beanie Babies together. I wanted to bring him home.

By March 16, they need 1,000 bottles of formula. Could YOU help make this happen?

—————

Option 1: Donate formula by dropping it off at or mailing it to:

2300 Holcomb Bridge Rd
Ste 103-C5
Roswell, GA 30076

Important Details:

No glass please. These could break when being transported.

Similac or Infamil is acceptable. FYI: the babies there spit up less when using Similac.

Ready-made, concentrate, and powder formula is acceptable. FYI: ready-made and concentrate are preferred since the water there is not always safe and bottled water is limited.

Option 2: Donate any amount of money here. We will then buy formula at a bulk price.

100% of what you give will go towards this immediate NEED.

Please! We have until March 16 to make this happen. We will personally take the formula to the orphanage in April.

Have you ever had a job and your boss resigned, was laid off, or got fired? Soon a new boss was coming on scene. How did you feel? Nervous? Uncertain?

What if you were the new boss coming on scene? How did you feel? Nervous? Wondered if people would like you and your vision?

I was the new kid on the block.

I walked into a team meeting where everyone stared at me. Hello first day at a new job, I thought.

Option 1: Lay out my ideas and strategies. Get people moving.

Option 2: Be honest about any awkwardness or apprehension in the room. Ask good questions. Actively listen.

I already knew which option was best (previously tried option 1 and it failed).

Robert Eckert, CEO of Mattel, said it best,

Setting the table means preparing the atmosphere for honest, collegial dialogue by drawing on a set of tools designed to quell any sense of apprehension.

Most of the time, the best move that we can make when we assume a new position is not to do much at all. The beginning and sustaining element of all work should be relationally-based. Why? Respect and loyalty for and from your employees.

When people gather together to share a meal, they are nourished not only in body but also in spirit. They become face-to-face equals who exchange opinions, ask questions, receive answers, and share ideas.

Next time you have a meeting with someone or with a group of people, perhaps you should try it over a meal. You might get more from your people and they may feel like the time was worth their being there unlike most meetings we attend.

Join Dr. Henry Cloud on January 28 for a FREE Simulcast. LIVE from 9-11am EST and On-Demand from 12-8pm EST.

Learn two imperative lessons:

how to deal successfully with the three different types of people you lead and interact with: wise people, foolish people, and evil people. He will help you spot these different types of behavior, discuss the challenges of dealing with each, and present effective solutions to help you move forward.

how to prune, which is removing the unwanted or superfluous in your organization. He will discuss the employees, businesses, and relationships that we all must give up in order for us to move forward. The content will serve as a diagnostic to help you see the things and people that are getting in the way of the success of your vision, whether dead, sick, or healthy, and the session will give you the practical tools that you need for you and your team to move forward.

Imagine access to some of the world’s best influencers for $.35 per day or less. No joke.

There are a lot of influencers offering coaching networks right now. In fact, it appears somewhat vogue. I have been part of several coaching experiences and most of them are overrated. Just my opinion.

I want a coaching experience that includes seven elements:

affordable

accessible

short

worthwhile content

start and end date

peer and team involvement

strategic plan

Developing a leadership plan and following through is essential for unlocking your true leadership potential. Yet, for many of us, finding a mentor to guide us on our leadership journey is harder than we imagined. This is where Leadership2Go can help. It’s a one-year online leadership development plan that’s engaging and easy to implement.

Each month, Tim Elmore will provide a video teaching session that includes interviews with well-known and influential leaders from both the corporate and non-profit worlds. In addition, you will receive a detailed growth plan that you can implement each month such as: a monthly reading plan, a note-taking guide, ideas for practicing leadership principles, discussion questions to use with your team, and access to an online community of fellow leaders.

In 2011, our theme is: The Elephant in the Room. Together, we will wrestle with critical leadership issues that everyone is aware of, but often are afraid to talk about. By the end of the year, you will be able to address some of the biggest obstacles leaders face with strength and integrity.

Sign up here. Better yet, sign up your team. It will cost you less! Tell them I sent you.
