Virtual community is infinitely more virtual than it is communal. Authentic community involves high degrees of intimacy, permanence, and proximity. While relative intimacy can be gained in virtual settings, the experiences of permanence and proximity have all but vanished.
He adds:
Our addiction to virtual community is understandable. The convenience factor is just too high. We love the efficiency of our interactions; they allow us to be in touch more often. However, there is a big difference between being “in touch” and truly connecting with others.
