Two years ago my grandfather died. He suffered for years with alzheimers. The deterioration of his mind and body was sad to watch.
As often as I would visit, I would watch those caregivers day in and day out meet the needs of my grandfather. They would pick him up. They would change him. They would bathe him. They would talk to him. They would feed him. They would listen to his repeated stories and not interrupt.
My grandfather depended on them.
Did the caregivers get tired? Did they get worn out? Did they get stressed? Did they get sad or depressed working in this environment?
I learned that they experience sadness, exhaustion, discouragement, stress, and even short-term employment.
I discovered that the signs of caregiver stress is the same for leaders:
- denial
- anger
- social withdrawal
- anxiety
- depression
- exhaustion
- sleeplessness
- irritability
- lack of concentration
- health problems
Do you see any of the above sign in your life?
