Communication: Jesus Style

[1. Use logic]

The practice of reasoning involves using established facts or assumptions to draw conclusions about the truth of something else.

[2. Appeal to people's emotions]

We need to use ideals that our audience has an emotional attachment to so that we can broaden their thinking.

[3. Build credibility]

Our lives must include the words pure, practical wisdom, life-words alignment, goodness, and virtue.

[4. Employ narrative and imagery]

People learn better and remember more easily with metaphors, stories, pictures, similes, when we communicate complex messages.

[5. Disciple]

We must develop Christ-followers to train others on how to initially connect with God and then how to take their right next step.

Josh – That’s a good question! A lot of what we write in the book is based on a combination of both the prescriptions in scripture (e.g., “Don’t cast your pearls before swine.”) and the actual rhetoric and actions of Jesus — with a decided emphasis on the latter, since rhetoric is a topic not often explicitly addressed in the New Testament. If you study Jesus’ actions and words, you’ll find that he used a number of tactics designed specifically to achieve Pathos — or emotional appeal — from his repeated use of narrative and imagery to his use of common values, shared artifacts, and poetic forms. There’s an article that addresses these topics in an abbreviated way here (http://www.intouch.org/site/c.cnKBIPNuEoG/b.5332613/k.265A/The_Message_and_the_Messenger.htm). If you want a more detailed discussion, you should definitely read the book!
