Selecting What To Read

January 4, 2010

I once would read anything and everything.  However, time is limited and I want to build out certain areas of my life.  I have resigned myself to select magazines and books using an easy strategy (that works for me).

I frequently purchase books. I also subscribe to several magazines.  Plus, I receive books from people and from publishers.  So, I have a system of how to handle them all.

I handle books and magazines by doing one of the following:

  • Reading cover to cover
  • Skimming
  • Giving away

I normally read from one of these categories:

  • Biographies
  • Leadership
  • Spiritual disciplines
  • Gen Y
  • Human behavior

*Sometimes I will simply read an executive summary to determine if I want to read the entire book.

  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • email
  • Print
  • MySpace
  • del.icio.us
  • Digg
  • Google Bookmarks
  • LinkedIn

I’m kind of the same way. I skim, skip around, and work through probably 3 books at a time. I also probably finish only 20% of them. That’s mostly because I think 80% of books are too long. By the time you get to the last 1/3, they are only rehashing their main point.
