I know some of you are curious about Twitter, but you are a little intimidated. Well, maybe today’s post will help you understand a little more. I have put together a glossary of Twitter terms I hope you find helpful.
- Hash Tag – Number sign followed by a keyword. This is used to create group tweets into categories. This is abbreviated as #.
- Reply – Public message directed at a particular Twitter user. A reply shows up in that user’s Twitter account, whether or not the user follows the person making the reply. This is abbreviated as @.
- Retweet – To pass along someone else”s tweet to your followers. This is abbreviated as RT.
- Short Link – A web link that is shortened to save space. Services like Bit.ly, J.mp, and Tr.im will shorten your links and keep track of how many people click on each one.
- Cross Promotion – This allows you to attract followers to another account. Often this is done when organizations, companies, or churches have multiple accounts.
- User Name – Your identity (name) on Twitter.
- Profile Pic – You can upload a cropped picture of yourself to serve as your Twitter persona. The picture size must be 700k or smaller. Twitter accepts three forms: JPG, PNG, GIF.
- Characters – Twitter asks the question, “What’s Happening?” You can respond with no more than 140 characters, including spaces.
- Direct Message - You can send a direct message to someone only if they are following you. This is abbreviated as D.

(I will say that I did not create the word twictionary. I just want to maintain integrity here.)
