The Spiritual Disciplines

Superficiality is the curse of our age.  The doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem.  The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.

We need to more often live in the depths.  Let’s explore the inner caverns of the spiritual realm.

Perhaps somewhere in the subterranean chambers of your life you have heard the call to deeper, fuller living.

Today there is an abysmal ignorance of the most simple and practical aspects of nearly all the classic spiritual disciplines.

To know the mechanics does not mean that we are practicing the disciplines.

The disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that he can transform us.

They (spiritual disciplines) are meant to bring the abundance of God into our lives.  It is possible, however, to turn them into another set of soul-killing laws.  Law-bound disciplines breathe death.

Our world is hungry for genuinely changed people.

[I am reading through Richard Foster's, Celebration of Discipline, for the third time. The above statements are from his book.]
