Gen Y Needs Atypical Workday

Gen Y is not designed to sit in front of a computer for 8 hours like so many of their previous generation counterparts.  Their brains are wired differently.  After  a designated period of time allow them a “break.”

Gen Y break might include briefly connecting on Text, Facebook or Twitter.  Consider this a mental break for them.  Many of your companies have blocked all social networking sites.  However, if they are allowed to touch base with “their” community, their work could become more effective and their increased efficiency may surprise you.

I find it funny that companies often protest this because it “interferes” with the work day, yet they provide their employees smoke breaks.  Interesting.

Don’t fight it.  Support it.  Use boundaries, of course.  Use it to your advantage.
