  • 11:50 AM jasonryoung - G.I. generation-childhood era is WW I, roaring 20’s; coming of age in great depression and WW II
  • 11:51 AM jasonryoung - Silent generation-childhood era is WWW II and Great Depression
  • 11:51 AM jasonryoung - boomer generation childhood area was american high
  • 11:51 AM jasonryoung - gen x childhood era was revolution and the coming of age was culture wars and 90′2 boom
  • 11:53 AM jasonryoung - millennial gen childhood era is culture wars and 90′2 boom; coming of age in financial crisis and war on terror
  • 11:54 AM jasonryoung - millennial gen is 1982-2004

  • 11:58 AM jasonryoung - they helped build the system in an era of historic reform
  • 11:59 AM jasonryoung - GI’s changed high schools/colleges in the mid-20’s
  • 12:00 PM jasonryoung - the silent generation-today they are 66-83; born 1925-1942
  • 12:01 PM jasonryoung - they got the name from keeping their heads down during the mccarthy ordea-refusing to speak out
  • 12:01 PM jasonryoung - sample members: john mccain, colin powell, nancy pelosi
  • 12:02 PM jasonryoung - nobody from this generation ever became president-john mccain was probably their last chance
  • 12:02 PM jasonryoung - they inherited the system in an age of broad consensus on education
  • 12:03 PM jasonryoung - boomers are 48-65; born 1943-1960
  • 12:03 PM jasonryoung - sample members: bill and hillary clinton, donald trump, spike lee, oprah winfrey, bill gates, george and laura bush
  • 12:05 PM jasonryoung - two trends that define them include: their individualism/self-sufficiency and their moralism/values-orientation
  • 12:07 PM jasonryoung - they are known for rejecting the system in an era of social turmoil, youth anger, and worsening outcomes

  • 12:08 PM jasonryoung - it’s focused on the individual-their prophetic vision
  • 12:08 PM jasonryoung - millennials are more focused on team as leaderhsip
  • 12:09 PM jasonryoung - gen x is age 27-47; born 1961-1981
  • 12:10 PM jasonryoung - they don’t want to be known as a real generation
  • 12:10 PM jasonryoung - generation of individuals
  • 12:10 PM jasonryoung - they are prone to risk
  • 12:10 PM jasonryoung - sample members: barack obama, michael dell, jeff bexos, tiger woods, jodie foster, kurt cobain
  • 12:11 PM jasonryoung - sometimes called the 13th generation
  • 12:12 PM jasonryoung - a generation wearing shades-when a boomer approaches them the gen xer can hide behind the shades and the boomer can see themselves in the shades-both are happy
  • 12:15 PM jasonryoung - they don’t trust the system
  • 12:15 PM jasonryoung - little continuity in their lives
  • 12:17 PM jasonryoung - gen xers got by without the system
  • 12:17 PM jasonryoung - gen xers want to be free agents-great for the economy
  • 12:18 PM jasonryoung - gen xers say: why ask why; read my lips; grab life by the horns
  • 12:18 PM jasonryoung - millennial generation born 1982 to 2004(ish)
  • 12:18 PM jasonryoung - the oldest is 26 right now
  • 12:19 PM jasonryoung - sample members: michael phelps, miley cyrus, lebron james, hilary duff, mark zuckerberg
  • 12:19 PM jasonryoung - remember baby on board sign? now associated with family vehicles-started in this generation
  • 12:21 PM jasonryoung - when parents could not protect their kids, they wanted they government to step-in and protect them
  • 12:24 PM jasonryoung - violent crime (victimization survey) has dropped in this generation more so than any generation before
  • 12:25 PM jasonryoung - substance abuse has declined too
  • 12:26 PM jasonryoung - child well-being has gotten better
  • 12:26 PM jasonryoung - millennials have higher fertility rate-often called echo boomer gen
  • 12:26 PM jasonryoung - this generation is the most diverse generation
  • 12:27 PM jasonryoung - millennials think they are perfect
  • 12:28 PM jasonryoung - eight character traits:
  • 12:30 PM jasonryoung - they are special
  • 12:32 PM jasonryoung - you make them strong; we’ll make them strong: this is a partnership between parents and millennials
  • 12:33 PM jasonryoung - they are sheltered
  • 12:33 PM jasonryoung - there have been a lot of child policies since 1982 like: megan laws, amber alerts, helmet rules, etc
  • 12:35 PM jasonryoung - convince them somebody is in charge
  • 12:35 PM jasonryoung - provide small environments
  • 12:35 PM jasonryoung - prevent measures to make sure nobody falls through the cracks
  • 12:36 PM jasonryoung - they are confident
  • 12:36 PM jasonryoung - not individually but together
  • 12:36 PM jasonryoung - they are targeted with positive messages
  • 12:37 PM jasonryoung - provide project-based environments
  • 12:37 PM jasonryoung - gen xers are about the journey; millennial gen are about the destination
  • 12:38 PM jasonryoung - they are team oriented
  • 12:39 PM jasonryoung - marketing is picking up on this
  • 12:40 PM jasonryoung - facebook, instant messaging, text messaging, cell phones, myspace-their community space
  • 12:41 PM jasonryoung - voters increase in the millennial gen-in 2008, they turned out with 52% turnout
  • 12:42 PM jasonryoung - teach team skills
  • 12:43 PM jasonryoung - strong service links are crucial to millennials
  • 12:44 PM jasonryoung - so many millennials want to be with family more
  • 12:45 PM jasonryoung - what’s the ipod overlap between student and parents? neil finds it to be around 30%. interesting
  • 12:46 PM jasonryoung - millennials think they need a prize-that’s why trophies and ribbons are given out
  • 12:47 PM jasonryoung - they want constant correction-don’t wait until the end
  • 12:47 PM jasonryoung - they are conventional
  • 12:48 PM jasonryoung - they are pressured
  • 12:49 PM jasonryoung - examples: sleep is down, homework hours up, temp work for pay is down, unstructured free play is down
  • 12:50 PM jasonryoung - they struggle with exit ramps that do not prepare them for the next on ramp
  • 12:50 PM jasonryoung - they want to trust the system-but they hesitate
  • 12:50 PM jasonryoung - the system is not delivering
  • 12:50 PM jasonryoung - they are achieving
  • 12:51 PM jasonryoung - the trophy kid, the super achiever
  • 12:51 PM jasonryoung - they take advance classes and placement tests
  • 12:51 PM jasonryoung - spelling bee is on espn and abc-very celebrated
  • 12:52 PM jasonryoung - words have gotten so much more difficult because of this-check out spelling bee words
  • 12:52 PM jasonryoung - this generation is capable of amazing accomplishments
  • 12:52 PM jasonryoung - keep them challenged
  • 12:52 PM jasonryoung - keep them directed
  • 12:52 PM jasonryoung - use technology in the process
  • 12:53 PM jasonryoung - help them master some part of modern technology
  • 12:53 PM jasonryoung - how will this gen do?
  • 12:55 PM jasonryoung - every generation redefines what it means to come of age

  • 12:57 PM jasonryoung - what about the expectations this generation has? you cannot judge expectations per se.
  • 12:57 PM jasonryoung - there is something refreshing when a new gen rises up
