Count the Right Things

June 10, 2009

I recall working at a mega-church once, and one of my job responsibilities was to provide accurate worship numbers each week.  We did this by having a photographer take pictures of each section in the Auditorium (from the catwalk) and then my assistant would count people (we hovered around 10,000 each Sunday).  Needless to say, this took some time and patience:)

The longer I worked there, the more I realized that numbers dominated.  Do not get me wrong, I know numbers are important.  We count people because people count.  However, my fear is that churches, especially Southern Baptist Churches, have been consumed with numbers and yet they are in decline.

Hear me out…my roots are Southern Baptist.  I have a right to speak here.

We count bodies.  We count money.  We tend to camp out there.

Are there not other items to measure and count?  I am not disregarding the aformentioned, but I am tired of only counting those items.  Perhaps a shift in approach could positively impact numbers.

“When you change the way you look at things; the things you look at change.”

Oh, yes companies do this too-not just churches.

Count the right things.
