Who Problem & What Strategy

April 23, 2009

I remember having an issue several years ago that centered around a particular person (in fact, I am currently having the same issue with a different person).  We have reassigned this person multiple times (in multiple areas of ministries) and the same results surface.  We talk to them.  We change their responsibilities.  We develop them (at least we think we are).  We reassign them.  The fact is they just don’t fit.  No matter how much you tweak the situation.

THEN it dawns on me:

I am spending all my time trying to create a what strategy when I simply have a who problem.  I have allowed myself to become consumed with creating a million different strategies for this person or people, and I get the same return.  Nothing healthy.  Therefore, I am learning that sometimes at the end of the day all the strategy in the world often needs to be overshadowed by the fact that there is a who problem.  In other words, deal with the who (and of course that does take strategy:)  The strategy mindset becomes different at this point.

It’s the Jim Collins bus mindset…right people on…in the right seat…

THEN you begin to move forward!

I am still learning.  I have messed this up many times before and I am sure I will so in the future.  However, for the sake of the whole we must pay close attention to our who’s.  It is our responsibility!
