Conversation With My Counselor

I have a friend who is also “my” counselor that I sit down with from time to time.  He helps me process my thoughts and feelings.  I recently visited him and we chatted about a number of things I am thinking and feeling.  We settled in on one word for the day (drum roll please)…boundaries.

Let me shoot straight: I am not the best at saying no to things.  What’s weird is I can say no to a lot, but when it comes to not bringing work home or not answering the phone or letting some people wait on an answer, I have weak boundaries.

So, we entered the conversation of boundaries (hence, you will see one of the books I am reading is called Boundaries).  I think what we talked about could help you too.  I said to him that I need to focus on what I CAN control. He agreed.  However, he went one step further.  He said I need to think about what I cannot control but need to control in order to become more healthy. He said with this step comes great risk.  Simultaneously, there is great reward.

So…what can you control?  One step further…what can you not control but need to control to become more healthy?

I can tell you that I am making a strategic and intentional effort to establish healthy boundaries before I go off the deep end:)
