I recently had a conversation with a good friend about care. More specifically, caring for those on our church staff. Here is what we discussed…
Who is taking the time to ask church staff how they are doing…really doing? Who is asking them what God is teaching them? Who is asking them how they are developing their strengths? Who is asking them what they need to enhance their ministry? Who is asking them about their family? Who is asking them if could use someone to pray with? Who is asking them what they are reading? Who is asking them what they might be struggling with?
The more people on church staff teams that I chat with, the more I realize the asking and caring is not taking place. I think the leaders above them assume spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and familial development is occurring. Don’t assume. They are waiting for you to ask. After all, you remember the old adage about what you could look like if you assume.
By the way…perhaps our external church ministries are not overwhelmingly effective because we are not doing a great job tending to the internal aspects of ministry…our church staffs. They need a shepherd too! Great leaders care!

Interesting that church staff need someone to search them out and pray and care for them. Nobody at my work (I don’t work at a church) complains about not being cared for or prayed for. If a staff member needs prayer and care, don’t wait for someone to approach you, go find it!
