Empowering vs Delegating

Empowering -give power or authority to; to enable or permit

Delegating -to entrust or transfer

If you were to look at the above definitions, you would not find a huge difference.  However, when you begin to put action to the above, there is a huge difference.  Most leaders can tell others what to do by delegating them assignments.  Delegating is so closely tied to tasks.  However, few leaders can take the time to enable them to make decisions by extending authority.  This takes time, trust, and getting out of the way.  Empowering is so closely tied to people.  When we empower others, we see their leadership soar.  In so doing, our leadership soars.

Today, I am having a team of leaders work with me.  My goal is to empower them to do great ministry!  I am in the trenches with you.

Perhaps your goals for 2009 should include at the top of the list…EQUIP, EQUIP, EQUIP.  When we equip people, we empower them to do effective ministry.  Afterall, remember we as ministry leaders should embrace Ephesians 4:12, “equip God’s people to do His work, and build up the church, the body of Christ.”
